India will observe Independence Day on August 15, 2026, and a question comes up every year around this date: is it the 79th Independence Day or the 80th? Both numbers are correct, depending on what exactly is being counted.

79 Years of Freedom

India became independent from British rule on August 15, 1947. Counting the years between 1947 and 2026 gives 79, since 2026 minus 1947 equals 79. This means that on August 15, 2026, India will complete 79 years of independence.

The 80th Independence Day Celebration

The first Independence Day was celebrated on August 15, 1947, the same day India gained independence. Because that first celebration is counted as the 1st Independence Day rather than the 0th, the count of celebrations runs one ahead of the count of years. As a result, August 15, 2026 will be the 80th Independence Day celebration.
