Kaizad Bharucha, Deputy Managing Director of HDFC Bank, is set to step down at the end of 2026 after more than three decades with the bank. In a stock exchange announcement, HDFC Bank said its Governance, Nomination and Remuneration Committee and its board approved his resignation, subject to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approval. Bharucha had also been nominated for the MD and CEO role, but Anup Bagchi was appointed MD and CEO for three years.

Who Is Kaizad Bharucha?

Kaizad Bharucha is an experienced Indian banker who has been with HDFC Bank since October 1995, when the bank was incorporated. He has held important roles in corporate, wholesale and select retail banking operations. Key points in his career:

  • October 1995: joins HDFC Bank
  • June 2014: appointed full-time director of the bank
  • April 2023: promoted to Deputy Managing Director
  • October 2026: requests cessation from service effective 31 December 2026, subject to RBI approval

His Contribution to HDFC Bank

Bharucha was especially known for building the bank's credit structure, including the framework for analysing borrowers, evaluating credit risk and taking lending decisions. The HDFC Bank board regards him as one of the architects of this system, which it considers a hallmark of the organisation. He also contributed significantly to the bank's corporate loan portfolio and continues to work in wholesale banking.

Why His Departure Matters

His exit is linked to a major leadership change at HDFC Bank. The board had nominated him for the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer positions. However, the RBI appointed Anup Bagchi, who earlier worked in the ICICI Group and ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, for a three-year term starting 27 October 2026.

Bharucha's request to leave was approved by the bank's Governance, Nomination and Remuneration Committee on 16 October and by its board on 17 October 2026. The request is pending RBI approval.
