On 17 October 2026, the old town hall of Limoges caught fire amid riots taking place across France. Local authorities described the incident as deliberate. The roof and main building suffered major damage and the building's famous clock tower collapsed, though parts of the structure, including the west wing, appear to have been spared. Further investigation is needed to assess the damage.
The riots across France were linked to the high cost of living, public services and education. Most protests were peaceful, but violent outbreaks occurred in some towns and public buildings became targets.
History of Limoges Town Hall
The Hôtel de Ville de Limoges is a historic civic building in Limoges, in the Haute-Vienne department of southwestern France. Construction began in 1879 and it opened to the public on 14 July 1883.
The town hired architect Charles-Alfred Leclerc, a Grand Prix de Rome winner and former chief architect at the Palace of Versailles. The project followed the death of a local resident, Alfred Fournier, who left his wealth to the city in 1875. The building was meant to symbolise civic pride and prosperity, and its design drew on the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, giving the city a grand civic building in the era of the French Third Republic.

Architectural Features
The town hall combined Neo-Renaissance and Louis XIII architectural styles. Its symmetrical façade, decoration, clock tower and roof made it one of the city's most significant buildings. Key elements were:
- Clock tower: the tower and belfry measured about 43 metres in height before the October 2026 fire
- Sculptural medallions: four medallions featured important figures from Limoges and French history
- Pediment sculptures: craftsmen practising goldsmithing and enamelling
- Interior decoration: a reception hall, a staircase, marble flooring and historical paintings
- Fountain: a stone fountain by Charles Genuys placed at the entrance in 1893
The decoration reflected the centuries-old tradition of Limoges porcelain and enamel.
Why the Town Hall Is Historically Significant
For more than 140 years the building served as a seat of administration and a symbol of local pride. It also hosted several events in the history of France and Europe.
In April 1871, amid the turmoil of the Paris Commune, crowds occupied the town hall demanding the creation of a commune in Limoges. In May 1940, during the Second World War, Limoges Mayor Léon Betoulle received Belgian Prime Minister Hubert Pierlot and members of the Belgian government-in-exile there.
The building was given the status of an important historical monument in 1975, which makes its destruction in October 2026 a loss that goes beyond an ordinary municipal structure.
