Mission Sudarshan Chakra Boosts India’s Drone Defence

Why in News?

The Government of India has accelerated the implementation of Mission Sudarshan Chakra, a comprehensive national initiative to build a multi-layered, AI-enabled air defence shield. Originally announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 15, 2025, the mission has gained strategic urgency following "Operation Sindoor" and the rising threat of cross-border drone intrusions. Recent developments include the creation of a dedicated Joint Counter-Unmanned Aerial System (CUAS) Grid to protect both military installations and civilian infrastructure.

Key Points

  • Layered Defence: The mission integrates a 360-degree security shield combining space-based surveillance, ground radars, and interceptor systems to neutralize threats like swarm drones, loitering munitions, and missiles.
  • Joint CUAS Grid: A specialized network separate from traditional air defence (like IACCS) is being established to focus exclusively on small, low-flying drones.
  • Hard & Soft Kill Measures: It employs "Soft Kills" (electronic jamming, GPS spoofing) and "Hard Kills" (Directed Energy Weapons/Lasers and kinetic interceptors like the L-70 guns).
  • Aatmanirbhar Bharat: All subsystems, including the Akashteer and Trigun networks, are indigenously researched and manufactured, targeting full operational readiness by 2035.
  • Indigenous Tech: Key components include DRDO’s QRSAM and VSHORADS, and high-power laser-based Directed Energy Weapons (DEW).

Important Terms

  • CUAS (Counter-Unmanned Aerial System): Technology designed to detect and/or intercept unmanned aircraft.
  • Directed Energy Weapons (DEW): Systems that use concentrated electromagnetic energy (like lasers) to destroy targets at the speed of light.
  • IACCS (Integrated Air Command and Control System): The automated system of the IAF that integrates all ground-based and airborne sensors.
  • Loitering Munitions: Also known as "suicide drones," these fly around a target area and attack once a target is identified.
