The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Act was passed in 2005 during September to ensure that the people of rural India are employed. The scheme was first applied to 200 backward districts on 2 February, 2006. After that it extended to 113 districts on 1 April, 2007 and 17 districts on 15 May, 2007. The Centre has reserved about Rs. 73000 crore for the MGNREGA programme in the Union Budget for 2022-23.
