It is conducted by both the Central Government and State Government. There are several posts for the profession of teacher varying from Pre- nursery, nursery, and primary, secondary and senior secondary; for each designation, a candidate required varied qualifications.

Level of Teaching for PRT, TGT & PGT

The varying posts are PRT, TGT and PGT. PRT is the designation for primary teachers, TGT is the designation for Trained Graduate Teachers and the PGT is for Post Graduate Teachers.

What is PRT?

The Full Form of PRT is Primary Teacher. An elementary school teacher is often referred to as a primary teacher. They are responsible to teach the students of mainly primary classes from 1st to 5th.

• To become a primary teacher a candidate must possess a diploma in elementary education i.e. the D.EI.Ed. Diploma in elementary education or D.El.Ed is a 2-year full-time diploma course with in-built classroom training for the candidate as well.
• Many private and government colleges/ universities are providing diploma courses in elementary education such as the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Indra Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) etc. are the major institutes offering the diploma course.

• The diploma course comprises lectures with inbuilt training sessions and is a challenging curriculum in elementary education programs.

Eligibility/ Qualification for PRT Diploma Course

• To study the D.EI.Ed, a candidate must have passed his/ her 10+2 with minimum of 55% marks, from a recognized board.
• A candidate needs to qualify the entrance exam to get admitted to the DI.EI.Ed.

What is TGT?

The Full Form of TGT is Trained Graduate Teachers. TGT teachers are responsible to teach the students of classes 6th to 8th but they are prepared and are eligible to teach 10th standard students too.

• The educational qualification for a TGT teacher is different compared to that of PRT teachers, it is general that their educational qualification is more compared to PRT teachers. TGT teachers are required to have a B.Ed degree along with 2 years of professional qualification.
• A candidate can choose any specialization as per their interest like Commerce arts science etc.
• B.ed is a 2-year full-time course imparting education in education and training and also training to the candidates.

Eligibility/ Qualification for TGT

• A candidate must have completed graduation with a minimum of 55% marks.
• A candidate must have attained a minimum of 19 years of age when applying for the exam.

What is PGT?

PGT full form is Post Graduate Teachers. The PGT are responsible to teach the senior secondary students, i.e. the students of classes 10th to 12th.

• Such designation holders are required to attain different qualifications for PRT and TGT.
• Such teachers are required to have a postgraduate degree and hold a B.Ed degree further to qualify for the post in any educational institute.

Eligibility/ Qualification for PGT

• A candidate must possess a Post Graduate degree in any desirable field and must have obtained a minimum of 55% marks for the same.
• A candidate applying for PGT – B.Ed needs to qualify for the entrance exam for the relevant course of the applying university.

TGT, PGT and TRT are designations for the post of the teaching profession and not qualification itself. These are the various posts for which a professional candidate may apply to the recruiting institutes i.e. Public Schools or Private Schools for jobs.

How are PRT and TGT Different?

PRT stands for Primary Teachers whereas TGT stands for Trained Graduate Teachers. PRT are at the level of Pre-Primary and Primary level of classes whereas TGT applied candidates will be able to teach the Upper Primary class students.

How are TGT and PGT Different?

A PGT teacher teaches the Senior Secondary students while the TGT teachers teach the students of the secondary classes.
