UPSC has given a detailed UPSC Geo Scientist syllabus 2026 for both the Prelims and Mains exams. This syllabus covers posts that include Geology/Hydrogeology, Geophysics and Chemistry. Prelims consist of two objective papers- Paper 1 (common, graduation-level science) and Paper 2 (stream-specific, M.Sc. level). Mains has three compulsory descriptive papers for each stream, all at the M.Sc. level.
UPSC Geo Scientist 2026 Prelims has two papers. Paper 1 is General studies and is common for all the three streams. While paper 2 is stream specific, that is, each stream has its own subject specific questions. It is objective, conducted offline and qualifying in nature. For each wrong answer, ⅓ marks are deducted.
Paper 1- General Studies (Common for all streams):
| Section | Topics Covered |
|---|---|
| Current Affairs | Current events of national and international importance |
| History | History of India and the Indian National Movement |
| Geography | Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World |
| Polity & Governance | Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc. |
| Economy & Development | Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc. |
| Environment & Ecology | General issues on Environmental Ecology, Biodiversity, and Climate Change (no subject specialization required) |
| Science | General Science |
Paper 2 (Stream-specific):
| Stream | Topics |
|---|---|
| Geology/Hydrogeology | Physical Geology, Structural Geology, Mineralogy, Igneous Petrology, Metamorphic Petrology, Sedimentology, Paleontology, Stratigraphy, Economic Geology, Hydrogeology. |
| Geophysics | Solid Earth Geophysics, Mathematical Methods in Geophysics, Electromagnetism, Geophysical Prospecting, Remote Sensing & Thermodynamics, Nuclear Physics and Radiometry |
| Chemistry | Chemical periodicity, Chemical bonding & structure, Acids & Bases, Theoretical basis of quantitative inorganic analysis, Kinetic theory and the gaseous state, Chemical thermodynamics and chemical equilibrium, Solutions of non-electrolytes, Electrochemistry, Basic organic chemistry, Stereochemistry, Types of organic reactions, Molecular Rearrangements. |
UPSC Geo Scientist 2026 Mains has three papers for each stream. For Geologist/Hydrogeologist, there are three papers; Geophysicists have three papers and in each paper there are two parts. For Chemists, there are three papers consisting of inorganic, physical and analytical or organic chemistry. UPSC Geo Scientist Mains is descriptive, conducted offline and marks are considered for final selection.
