Eligible candidates can now download their UPSC ESE Mains Admit Card 2026 using their registration credentials. UPSC Engineering Services (Main) Examination 2026 is scheduled to be conducted on June 21 2026. UPSC ESE 2026 Notification has been released on the official website on September 26 2025. Candidates can view the information regarding detailed eligibility criteria, vacancy selection Process, exam dates, exam pattern, syllabus, reservation rules, etc. Registration for IES 2026 is open till October 16, 2025.
UPSC has announced that a total of 474 vacancies will be filled through the Engineering Services Examination (ESE) 2026. These vacancies are distributed across four core engineering branches: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics & Telecommunication.

UPSC IES 2026 Eligibility criteria are based on factors of Nationality, Age Limit, and Educational qualification. Candidates failing to meet the parameters will be disqualified.

Indian Radio Regulatory Service Group A: M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a subject or Master’s Degree in Science with Physics and Radio Communication or Electronics or Telecommunication as a special subject.
IES Age limit requires candidates to be between 21 and 30 years as of January 1 2025. The upper age limit is relaxable for the following categories:

IES 2026 Application Process has started from September 26, 2025. Candidates should follow he steps below for IES 2026 Application:
Step 1: Go to UPSC’s official website and register yourself in the One Time Registration (OTR) portal by providing your mobile number and email.
Step 2: After OTP submission, fill in the personal details, ID Proof and others to submit and generate your profile and Unique Registration number.
Step 3: Login again with the credentials and select UPSC IES 2026 Application link from the exam dashboard.
Step 4: Fill in the details such as Social Category Profile, Disability Profile, Address, Educational Profile etc.
Step 5: Proceed to pay the application fee online. Check the table below for the application fee details:

IES 2026 Admit Card has been released on the official website on January 30, 2026. Candidates can follow the below steps to download the admit card:
Step 1: Go to UPSC’s official website and click the ‘Admit Cards’ link.
Step 2: Under the admit cards section, select ‘Engineering Services (Mains) Examination, 2026’
Step 3: After agreeing on the instructions, opt to download through Registration ID or Roll Number.
Step 4: Enter the credentials and submit to view the admit card. Download it to your device and carry the hardcopy on the day of exam.
IES 2026 Prelims Exam consists of 2 papers with a total of 500 marks. Paper 1 deals with General Studies and Engineering aptitude while Paper 2 with discipline-specific matters. IES 2026 Mains Exam consists of 2 papers with a total of 600 marks.

IES 2026 Prelims Syllabus consists of 2 papers. Paper 1 deals with General Studies and engineering aptitude and contains the following topics:

IES Selection Process happens in 3 stages. Eligible candidates applying for the exam undergo the following 3 stages:
Candidates qualifying the Prelims exam will be shortlisted for the mains. While Prelim is of an objective type, Mains is descriptive in nature. Candidates qualifying the mains exam will be shortlisted for the Interview which will be marked out of 200. It is conducted to evaluate skills such as leadership, practical applications of engineering, ability to take responsibility etc.
Candidates qualifying the interview stage are subjected to medical examination in an UPSC-authorised government hospital. The Final Merit list is prepared based on the aggregate marks of all 3 stages.

Ques: Can a candidate opt for multiple streams for IES?
Ans: Candidates can select one of the four disciplines for IES exam during the application process. Selection of multiple streams is not allowed.
Ques: Should candidates apply for Prelims and Mains together?
Ans: Yes, candidates should apply for both Prelims and Mains in a single application. Those qualifying the Prelims are automatically eligible for the mains, and are required to fill only a DAF before the mains.
Ques: How many attempts are there for IES?
Ans: Candidates can try unlimited attempts for IES until they qualify. This must be within the age limit.
Ques: Does IES mains have negative marking?
Ans: IES Mains does not have negative marking as it is of descriptive type. IES Prelims exam however, has negative marking.
Ques: Is the syllabus for Prelims and Mains the same?
Ans: The subjects for IES Prelims and Mains are almost the same. The key difference is that the contents of General Paper of Prelims are excluded from the Mains. All the questions are subject-specific and technical.
