UPSC ESE 2026 Eligibility Criteria is based on the factors of age, nationality, and educational qualification. Candidates applying must not exceed the upper age limit, which is 30 years, with relaxation applicable to reserved categories as per government norms. Applicants must possess a degree in engineering from a recognised university. Candidates currently in their final year or awaiting their results are not eligible to apply for the exam. They must also be indian nationals. Candidates found ineligible under any of these parameters will be disqualified from UPSC IES 2026.

UPSC ESE Nationality Criteria 2026

UPSC ESE eligibility criteria include candidates with the following nationality:

  • Citizen of India
  • Subjects of Nepal, Bhutan
  • Persons of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, Vietnam) with the intention of permanent settlement in India.

Note: Certificate of eligibility must be issued by the Government of India to e eligible for UPSC IES 2026.

UPSC ESE Educational Qualification 2026

ESE Educational qualification requires candidates to possess a degree in Engineering from a recognised university or institution, or any of the following qualifications :

  • A degree in Engineering University listed under the Act of the Central or State Legislature in India or other Educational Institutions listed under the Act of Parliament.
  • Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers
  • Obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from a foreign University/ Institution/ College ( recognised in India)
  • Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers
  • Passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India
  • Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics & Radio Engineers, London, held after November 1959

Apart from the above qualifications, candidates applying for the following posts can have the respective qualifications as mentioned below :

Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engg. Posts): M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a special subject.

Indian Radio Regulatory Service Group A: M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics or Radio Engineering as a subject or Master’s Degree in Science with Physics and Radio Communication or Electronics or Telecommunication as a special subject.

UPSC ESE Age Limit 2026

UPSC ESE Age limit requires candidates to be between 21 and 30 years as of January 1 2025. The upper age limit is relaxable for the following categories for UPSC IES 2026:

SC/ST 5 years
OBC 3 years
Defence Services personnel, disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area, and released as a consequence thereof. 3 years
ECOs/SSCOs served for 5 years in Military services who has completed/ extended the assignment (If Ministry of Defence has permitted to apply for Civil Services) 5 years
Jammu and Kashmir domicile (between 1st January 1980 and 31st December 1989) 5 years

The following PwD Candidates have an upper age relaxation of 10 years:

  • Low vision,
  • deaf and Hard of Hearing,
  • Locomotor Disability, including Leprosy cured,
  • Dwarfism, Acid Attack victims,
  • Muscular Dystrophy,
  • Specific Learning Disability and Mental Illness.

Note: The above relaxation is applicable only if the candidate holds a permanent post or retains a lien on a permanent post. Candidates in temporary service on a regular basis for at least 3 years are also applicable.
